The Calanques are a succession of deep limestone inlets running from the edge of the city to Cassis, and they are the most dramatic coast in France. From a ship, the practical way in is a boat from the Vieux-Port, which shows you Sormiou and En-Vau from the water without committing to a hike.

On foot, the park is regulated rather than open: summer quotas apply to the best-known inlets, and the whole massif can close on high wildfire-risk days. Check the park’s own bulletin the morning you go, and wear shoes that grip polished limestone.
