The castle holds the highest ground in old Lisbon, and the walk along its walls is the one place that gives you the Baixa grid, the river and the 25 de Abril bridge in a single sweep. Towers, gardens and resident peacocks fill the interior; the camera obscura is the genuine oddity, and it depends on the weather that day.

Be honest about the cost of getting there: the approach is steep, the paving is rough, and Alfama’s free viewpoints deliver a similar horizon for nothing. The walls are what you are paying for.
