InterContinental Marseille — Hôtel Dieu

An eighteenth-century hospital on the hill, with the best terrace view of the Bonne Mère.

Le PanierDocumented

The building was the Hôtel-Dieu, a hospital founded in the eighteenth century and inaugurated in its final form under Napoleon III; the conversion keeps the monumental façades and puts a contemporary interior behind them, on the slope of Le Panier.

The terrace is the reason people who are not staying still come: it projects over the Vieux-Port with the basilica on the opposite hill, which is the city’s own postcard taken from the inside. For a turnaround call it sits between the port and the old town.
