Spaccanapoli — “Naples-splitter” — is an accurate nickname: from the Vomero you can see the straight line the Greek grid cut two and a half millennia ago and the city never closed. Walking it is the city in one gesture: Baroque façades hung with laundry, a chapel one alley over, the nativity-figure workshops of San Gregorio Armeno working in August as if it were Christmas Eve.
It costs nothing and starts a short walk from the ship, which makes it the best first hour a call in the Tyrrhenian can buy. Church opening windows and individual admissions vary and are not listed here until each institution is checked.
