Fortified tower

Torre de Belém

The most photographed thing in Belém — and the one whose outside is most of the value.

October–May 10:00–17:30 · May–September 10:00–18:30 · closed Mondays, 1 Jan, Easter Sunday, 1 May, 13 Jun and 25 DecBelémDocumented

Raised as a gun platform at the mouth of the Tagus and originally named for St Vincent, the tower became the visual shorthand for Portuguese expansion: limestone worked with nautical motifs, casemates below, a terrace over the estuary above.

Inside, a single spiral stair carries traffic in both directions under light control, which is where the waiting happens. If the day is short, the promenade view delivers the building; the climb is for readers with hours to spend and no stairs to fear.
