Where alpinism was invented, and where the glaciers are visibly retreating.
Chamonix sits under Mont Blanc and works in both seasons: skiing and off-piste from December, climbing and hiking from June. The Aiguille du Midi cable car reaches 3,842 metres in twenty minutes. The Mer de Glace is the clearest demonstration in Europe of what is happening to Alpine ice.
